FAQs

What is traditional Chinese medicine?
According to the principles of TCM, a life-energy called qi circulates in our bodies through an intricate web of energy pathways known as meridians. When these pathways are not functioning properly as a result of illness, poor diet or stress, the flow of qi can weaken or become blocked. This can affect organ function and cause illness. TCM helps to restore the body to a state of balance, healing illness and improving wellbeing.
Is acupuncture treatment covered by health insurance?
Most private insurance policies cover acupuncture treatment. Check your policy for details.
What kind of conditions can TCM treat?
At Sustain Health, we specialise in treating and managing allergies, fertility and spinal problems and providing pain relief.
What is the difference between a natural health practitioner and a regular doctor?
The main difference between natural and conventional healthcare is the philosophy and practice of medicine. Rather than focusing on treating a set of symptoms, a natural health practitioner will look at the root cause while supporting the natural healing process of the body. At Sustain Health, our natural health professionals take the time to listen and establish a personal relationship with each patient.
Will acupuncture treatment hurt?
Patients commonly feel a slight pinch or pressure, followed by a tingling sensation at the site of the needle. You can expect to experience a deep sense of relaxation during and after treatment.
What can I expect during an initial consultation?
Your initial visit with us will usually last up to one hour. We take a complete health history and carry out physical examinations. In some cases, patients will need to have x-rays or arrange to have a blood test. When your problem has been diagnosed, your practitioner will create a treatment plan tailored to your needs and health goals. Normally, you will receive your first treatment on the initial visit.
What is a standard consultation?
A standard consultation is a follow-up appointment. This usually only takes 15-20 minutes and will consist of a brief assessment of progress, followed by a treatment session.
What is a rehabilitation consultation?
This type of treatment involves a combination of passive, active and resistive motion exercises. Chiropractic manipulation and soft tissue therapy are also administered for optimal results. This type of consultation will take about 40 minutes.
Why do I need a reexamination consultation?
At a certain point during your treatment your practitioner will want to review your treatment plan and make sure it is working for you. If necessary your treatment will be changed to get you back on the right path to health. Your practitioner will review your history and assess your progress to date. You may be referred for another x-ray at this stage to check on your spinal alignment.
What methods of payment do you accept?
We accept Eftpos, Visa and Mastercard. HICAPS-Health funds claims on the spot from most private health funds.
What is your cancellation policy?
There is no charge if your appointment is cancelled or rescheduled 24 hours in advance. If you are unable to make your appointment please let us know so that we can allocate the time to another patient. Appointments cancelled without 24 hour notification will incur a fee.
Do I need to take Chinese herbs or have acupuncture treatment for the rest of my life?
No, but courses of treatment vary depending on the condition and the health of the patient. You can usually expect to see results after 4 to 6 sessions. For those with chronic conditions, we recommend a course of treatment of between three and six months.
