Chinese Medicine for Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition that affects the reproductive system or the outside of a reproductive system in women. This is caused by the endometrial tissue and its movement to endometrial, a layer of tissue lining the uterus and other parts of reproductive system. This is now a common health problem world wide and has also come to be known as “the career woman’s disease”. It is being estimated that 15 % of menstruating women between 25 and 44 have endometriosis.
Sustain Health’s Melbourne Chinese Medicine Clinic has been successful in diagnosing this illness and has been treating patients suffering from endometriosis. The traditional Chinese medicine has arrived at a diagnosis that the primary pattern that causes this disease is blood stasis. Blood stasis, caused by emotional distress, chronic illness, exposure to cold and genital infections can be controlled by using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Salvia (Dan Shen); red peony root (Chi Shao); persica seed (Tao Ren); safflower (Hong Hua); bur-reed rhizome (San Leng); and zedoary (E Zhu) are some of the herbs used to disperse blood stasis.

Common patterns of endometriosis and their Chinese Medicine cure:

  • Qi stagnation and blood stasis – this pattern is caused by stress and anxiety can be averted by the use of Diaphragm Decoction (Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang) which is a stagnation relieving formula and is used to fight this pattern of endometriosis.
  • Kidney and blood stasis – the origin of this pattern lies in weakness or a history of surgical procedures. A herbal combination of a kidney tonic and a blood stasis relieving formula Gui Shen Wan and Four-Substance Decoction with Safflower and Persica Seed (Tao Hong Si Wu Tang) is the remedy for this pattern.
  • Cold retention and blood stasis – An individual goes through this pattern when there is a history of exposure to cold temperatures or consumption of cold food during menstruation. This pattern can be treated by driving out the stasis using Abdomen Decoction (Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang).
  • Heat obstruction and blood stasis – The formula of StagnationEASE (Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang) is used to treat this pattern of endometriosis caused by accumulation of heat toxins in the body and a history of genital infections.
Sustain Health Clinic’s Chinese Acupuncture is also very effective in improving the functioning of the immune system which is also a cause for endometriosis. The illness is a neuro – immuno – endocrine related, hence acupuncture stimulates the nervous system which releases hormones and relieves pain. This use of specific acupuncture can control endometriosis and can lead to dramatic improvements in a patients condition.
