How does chiropractic work?

Restricted joint movement leads to interrupted nerve signals to the brain, which is interpreted as pain. Chiropractors use a low amplitude, high-velocity push to joints, causing them to stretch and sometimes painlessly ‘pop’ or ‘crack’. This sound is the release of gas in the joint which can stimulate the nervous system to reduce pain signals. Chiropractors may also use muscle stretching to loosen tightness around the joint.

Chiropractic

Laying on your stomach, back, or in a sitting position, your practitioner will move, stretch, and adjust different muscles and bones. This creates greater freedom of movement and your practitioner will take care to warn you of any sudden adjustments and ensure your comfort. You generally do not need to remove any clothing. They may also offer lifestyle advice, such as changing your sitting position or sleeping habits, or refer you for an X-ray if necessary.

FAQs

Some traditional chiropractors only work on spinal manipulation. However, in line with the current evidence-based practice, spinal mobilisations and a range of treatment methods (e.g. dry needling, soft tissue technique) are also used by Chiropractors at Sustain Health to address the whole body.
Yes, an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC) may provide you with up to 5 free treatments. You will need to get a referral from your GP to access it.
Yes, it is safe to have chiropractic treatments whilst pregnant. The developing foetus is well protected in its uterine bubble of amniotic fluid. Adjustments to the spine and pelvis do not interfere with this and there are many other techniques we can use that are safe.
Acupuncture complements chiropractic to help with the rehabilitation process and maximises your treatment.
Just as with any treatment, there is a possibility of adverse reactions after chiropractic adjustments, but are generally very mild (e.g. soreness after treatment). Severe adverse reactions are very rare. Our Chiropractors discuss this in detail and obtain your informed consent prior to any treatment given.

We are registered with HICAPS and participating Health Funds can be found here. The ability to claim the cost of our services is dependent on your coverage as most Health Funds cover acupuncture, but with varying rates. Bring your Health Fund card to claim rebates upon payment or ask for an invoice. If you are purchasing a Package of 12 consultations or a program upfront, we can provide you with treatment invoices to be claimed individually on in bulk.
Most of our practitioners are registered with Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Workspace. Our chiropractors are also registered with Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) or Chronic Disease Management (CDM), which are funded by Medicare. Our services can be claimed with a valid referral from your GP.
